Body Intelligence Techniques are practical applications of Ayurvedic principles that benefit digestion and strengthen agni, the digestive fire. You can put these BITS into practice right away.
ΓÇó Only eat when you are hungry.
Don't eat until your last meal
has been digested: this usually
takes from three to six hours.
Frequent snacking leads to
overweight and accumulation
of toxins.
ΓÇó Whenever possible, eat freshly
cooked foods: both raw foods
and many leftovers are difficult
to digest. A certain amount of
uncooked food, such as salads,
is fine, but in general Ayurveda
recommends well-cooked meals.
ΓÇó Eat in a quiet, relaxed
atmosphere: even if you only
have fifteen or twenty minutes
in which to eat, it's important
to set everything else aside
and allow your body to focus
on eating and digesting. This
can't happen amid noise and
distractions.
ΓÇó Always eat sitting down, and
eat at a comfortable pace: this
helps focus awareness and
increases enjoyment of food.
ΓÇó Don't eat when you're upset:
if you're angry or nervous, put
off eating until you feel calmer.
ΓÇó Avoid overeating: Ayurveda
teaches that we should only eat
to three fourths of our capacity.
More than this smothers the
digestive fire.
ΓÇó Avoid cold foods and iced
drinks: these chill the system
and create toxic accumulations.
In fact, sipping warm water
while you eat can soothe the
gastrointestinal tract and
facilitate digestion.
ΓÇó Chew food thoroughly: this
makes digestion easier and
enhances your awareness of
how each food tastes.
ΓÇó Take a few minutes to rest after
you eat: this helps digestion
begin without stress.
